Review: Breedlove

Breedlove
Mondays @ Midnight
St. Jerome’s, Lower East Side

On the Lower East Side, you can be anything that you want and still be fabulous, and St. Jerome’s Bar between Clinton and Suffolk is a whole mess of beautiful, “mess” being the key word. Going there on any given night, there’s cheap beer, pretty girls, and a DJ spinning rock n’ roll roll, but Mondays at midnight is when the “filthy glamour” takes over, with weekly sets by New York singer/performance artist Breedlove.

Review: Johnny Gallagher

Johnny Gallagher
October 10th, 2010
Rockwood Music Hall, Lower East Side

It seems that everyone on the Great White Way is balancing a music career on the side these days… but why not? The actors that work hard in Broadway musicals every day are there for a number of reasons, including their vocal abilities. The show that seems to really be harboring all of the potential cross-over talent, though, is Green Day’s American Idiot, with many of its cast members also performing in the role of New York City singer-songwriters. One of the play’s leads, John Gallagher Jr, or as he is billed at Rockwood Music Hall, Johnny Gallagher, is a Tony Award winner with a sweet disposition and folk rock heart.

Review: Semi Precious Weapons

Semi Precious Weapons w/ Breedlove, The Dirty Pearls, Lady Starlight
October 8th, 2010
Irving Plaza, Union Square

Last night, Manhattan’s Irving Plaza was a battleground. The war waged was one in honor of bringing rock n’ roll back to New York City and mainstream music, a cause that has been ignored for far too long. The military general leading the blitz was Justin Tranter, with an infantry of the Lower East Side’s favorite rock kings and queens, Lady Starlight, Breedlove, and the guys of Semi Precious Weapons. “Rock n’ roll is not on the television, and it’s not on the radio, but it’s right here. Right now. So fuck the T.V., fuck the radio, I just want to fuck you”, was Tranter’s speech to a crowd of screaming and nearly naked fans, a moment that made at least one thing clear: victory had been claimed, and winning the war is only a shot away.

Daniel Cho Benefit
Regina Spektor, Jenny Owen Youngs, and many others

September 27th, 2010
Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn

When musicians and fans comes together for a personal cause, a show feels more like a gathering of friends than a concert. After the tragic and untimely death of cellist Daniel Cho, a show to benefit his family was organized by artists and friends who had worked with and known him over the years. Singer-songwriters Regina Spektor and Jenny Owen Youngs were highlights of the night among a line-up of ten separate acts who came out to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in honor of Dan Cho.
